What is Coaching? 

Coaching is used in both personal and corporate arenas. Although it originated in the world of sports, it has become a distinct profession that is continuing to grow as individuals and organisations have begun to see the effectiveness of using coaching skills to improve performance especially when compared to other more traditional methods of training. Coaching is an interactive process where the Coach guides and facilitates the client’s progress towards defined goals. It is about facilitating the unlocking of potential in an individual in order for them to maximise their performance through their own learning and creativity. Using a coach enables you to reach your destination quicker than if you had done it on your own.

During the coaching process, clients are offered a supportive and motivating environment to explore what they want in life and how they might achieve their aspirations and fulfil their needs. By assisting the client in committing to action and by being a sounding-board to their experiences, coaching allows the individual the personal space and support that they need to grow and develop. The coach’s key role is often is assisting the client to maintain the motivation and commitment needed to achieve their goals.

Typically a coaching session will last anything between forty-five and ninety minutes and can be carried out face to face or via telephone or Skype. Enough time needs to be left in between sessions (commonly between two to four weeks) to enable the client work on the goals discussed during the session. The total number of sessions is usually anything between four and six sessions but is dependent on the particular circumstances of the client and the issues that they want to work on.
